The USA and Canada annunciate Phase II of Truck Cargo Pre-inspection Pilot Project
On Feb 24th, our Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, Steven Blaney officially sent forth the next phase of the truck cargo pre-inspection pilot at the Peace Bridge Canada Customs side of the border at Fort Erie. The project is a main deliverable under the Beyond the Border Action Plan imposed jointly by our countries in December 2011.
The main objective for the pilot is to test the approach of carrying out by CBP primary inspection of U.S.-bound truck cargo on Canadian soil in order to better manage our mutual Customs border and develop economic opportunities for both countries.
Canada and the United States endorsed the Memorandum of Understanding in Mar 2011, that empowered the U.S. CBP truck cargo pre-inspection pilot project to be implemented at Canada Customs facilities. Phase I of the pilot is currently operational at the Pacific Highway Customs crossing between Surrey, British Columbia and Blaine, Washington.
The goal of pre-clearance is to facilitate the stream of legitimate commerce and travelers and at the same time safeguard Customs border protection.
