Canadian Customs border officers waive duties for cross-border shoppers

Customs brokers did not fail to notice that, according to a resent report, Canadian Customs border inspectors usually waive duties and taxes on items imported travellers from the States.

Retailers are worried that the Canada Border Services Agency is giving too much slack to the Canadian cross-border shoppers, which is costing our economy millions of dollars in domestic sales.

The note says the border agency waives duties and taxes when the value is below a certain threshold, an amount blacked out in the released document.

The issue is that the final decision is up to a Customs officer dealing with a traveller. The officer might give a green light based on many factors one of which to be a volume of the travellers at a particular time.

We at Dilas Intl as Canadian Customs broker will be keeping an eye on the situation with the cross-border travellers.
